The horsepower range of yachts varies widely, from several dozen horsepower for small yachts to over ten thousand horsepower for superyachts. For example, small yachts are typically equipped with compact engines ranging from a few dozen to several hundred horsepower, making them ideal for coastal cruising and recreational activities. In contrast, large luxury yachts and superyachts may be fitted with engines delivering thousands or even tens of thousands of horsepower, enabling higher speeds and superior performance.
Specifically, some high-end yachts are equipped with exceptionally powerful propulsion systems. For example, the yacht Kereon is fitted with three CRM diesel engines, totaling 6,300 horsepower, enabling it to reach a top speed of 62 knots. Another yacht, named Galeocerdo, is powered by three Vericor TF50 gas turbines, each paired with a Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjet propulsor, delivering a combined output of up to 16,800 horsepower and allowing it to achieve a maximum speed of 65 knots.
In addition, the horsepower of a yacht is closely related to its design and intended use. Large yachts typically require more powerful engines to support their weight and achieve higher speeds.
